Both Hands Are Swollen: What to Know

Check whether rings feel tight, the fingers are stiff, or pressing the skin leaves a dent. The timing, symmetry, pain, warmth, and swelling elsewhere in the body give a clinician more useful information than puffiness alone.

Hands can look puffy after heat exposure, prolonged inactivity, or sustained use, and the swelling may settle when the trigger passes. Joint inflammation is another pattern: rheumatoid arthritis can cause swelling in joints on both sides, often with stiffness and tenderness. This presentation requires clinical assessment rather than diagnosis from appearance alone.

An injury can swell the hand or wrist; a distal radius fracture commonly presents after wrist trauma and may cause pain, bruising, limited movement, and swelling on the injured side. Swelling affecting both hands without matching injuries may point the assessment toward a broader inflammatory, medication-related, circulation, kidney, heart, liver, or thyroid issue.

Remove rings, watches, or tight bands before swelling increases. Rest the hands in a comfortable raised position and open and close the fingers gently if movement is not painful. Avoid forceful massage over an injured, hot, or very tender area.

Record when the swelling starts, how long it lasts, whether morning stiffness is present, and whether the feet, face, or other joints are affected. Bring an up-to-date medication list to an appointment because some medicines can contribute to fluid retention. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without guidance from its prescriber.

Seek emergency help if hand swelling occurs with trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Prompt assessment is also needed when a hand becomes cold, pale, blue, severely painful, or difficult to move, particularly after an injury.

Contact a clinician soon for redness and warmth with fever, swelling that is worsening or repeatedly returning, new joint stiffness, reduced hand function, or swelling accompanied by reduced urination, breathlessness, or swelling in the legs or face.

You might ask whether the swelling seems centered in the joints or soft tissues, whether any medication could contribute, and whether blood tests or imaging would change the plan. Clarify which hand movements are suitable while the cause is being assessed.
