What should you know about both eyes itching?

Both eyes itching can follow pollen, dust, cosmetics, skincare, contact-lens products, soap, or rubbing. Dry, flaky, cracked skin around the lids may fit eczema or contact dermatitis. Watery eyes and sneezing can point toward allergy, while sticky discharge, a gritty feeling, or a red eye may need an eye-focused assessment.

Conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, or hives can affect nearby skin, although the appearance and distribution differ. Scabies can cause intense itching and may involve other household members or body areas. A skin yeast infection is less typical around the eyelids, but a clinician can help separate look-alike conditions.

Stop newly introduced cosmetics, creams, eye drops, or contact-lens products until the trigger is clearer, unless a clinician told you to continue them. Do not rub the eyes. Use a clean cool compress over closed lids and wash hands before touching the area. Avoid sharing towels, makeup, or eye products, and discard old eye makeup if contamination is possible.

Do not put steroid, antibiotic, or anti-itch cream into the eye or directly on the eyelid without professional advice. An optometrist, ophthalmologist, or doctor may examine the eye surface and eyelid skin, especially when symptoms persist, recur, or are linked with a new product.

Seek urgent eye or medical care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, severe redness, pus, an injury, or a chemical splash. Emergency help is needed for sudden vision loss, trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Do not delay because itching alone can sometimes accompany a more serious eye or allergic problem.
