What should you know about borderline low amniotic fluid?

It is not the same as a definite diagnosis of oligohydramnios. Your maternity team considers the stage of pregnancy, the measurement method, fetal growth, movements, placental findings and whether your waters may have broken.

Amniotic fluid surrounds the baby and supports movement and development. Later in pregnancy, much of it comes from fetal urine and is continually swallowed and replaced. Ultrasound estimates fluid using pockets visible around the baby rather than directly measuring every drop.

A reading can vary with fetal position, scanning technique and time. Lower fluid may occur after membrane rupture, with placental problems, alongside restricted fetal growth, with some fetal urinary-tract conditions, or without a clear cause. One borderline result therefore does not determine the outcome or the plan by itself.

Attend the repeat ultrasound, growth scan or fetal monitoring offered by your maternity team. Ask which measurement was used, whether growth and blood-flow findings are reassuring, and when fluid will be checked again.

Notice your baby's usual movement pattern and follow your maternity unit's instructions if that pattern changes. Drink normally and avoid dehydration, but do not rely on extra water to replace medical monitoring. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless the maternity clinician advises it.

The care plan may range from observation to closer monitoring or birth planning. Gestational age, fetal wellbeing, growth, possible membrane rupture and the trend across scans influence whether induction of labour is discussed.

Contact your maternity unit immediately if your baby is moving less than usual or the movement pattern changes. Do not wait until the next day or use a home heartbeat device for reassurance.

Urgent assessment is also needed for a gush or ongoing trickle of fluid from the vagina, vaginal bleeding, regular painful contractions, fever, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with visual changes, or suddenly feeling very unwell. Wear a pad rather than inserting a tampon if fluid may be leaking, and note its colour and smell.

Ask whether the result is a single finding or a downward trend, how the baby is growing, whether placental blood flow was assessed, how to recognise leaking waters, and what would change the timing or method of birth. Request a clear contact route for concerns between appointments.
