What should you know about bone mass density?

Short answer

The phrase bone mass density generally refers to bone mineral density, an estimate of mineral content that helps clinicians assess bone strength and fracture risk.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Direct answer

It is most often measured with a DEXA or DXA scan at the hip and lower spine. Density is one part of bone quality, so a scan result is interpreted with health history, previous fractures and fall risk.

Understanding density scores

A DEXA report may include a T-score, which compares the measurement with a young-adult reference, and a Z-score, which compares it with people of similar age and sex. The relevant comparison depends on age and clinical circumstances.

Lower density means bone may tolerate less force before breaking, yet it does not predict an individual fracture with certainty. A clinician also considers steroid exposure, menopause, low-trauma fractures, smoking, alcohol use, body weight, mobility and conditions that affect nutrient absorption or hormones.

Supporting bone health

Use the result to make a personalised plan. Weight-bearing movement, progressive resistance exercise, balance work, sufficient dietary protein, calcium and vitamin D, stopping smoking and reducing fall hazards can each address a different part of fracture prevention.

Do not start high-impact exercise without guidance if you have a vertebral fracture, marked frailty or significant pain. When fracture risk is high, a clinician may discuss medication, including bisphosphonate therapy, after reviewing kidney health, dental issues, swallowing problems and other relevant factors.

When to seek care

Bone loss itself may cause no symptoms. Seek prompt assessment for sudden back pain, new loss of height, a change in spinal shape, or persistent pain and difficulty using a limb after a minor fall, because a fracture may be present.

Arrange a bone-health review if you sustain a low-trauma fracture, enter early menopause, use long-term corticosteroids, or develop a condition that can weaken bone. The need for testing depends on the whole risk profile rather than age alone.

Questions about your result

Ask which score applies to you, whether the images were technically reliable, what factors contribute to your fracture risk, and whether blood tests are needed to look for a secondary cause. Confirm how progress will be judged and when another scan could change management.

Questions people ask

Is bone density the same as bone strength?

Not exactly. Mineral density contributes to strength, while bone structure, turnover, previous damage and the force of a fall also influence whether a fracture occurs.

Can exercise improve bone health?

Weight-bearing and resistance activity can support bone and muscle, while balance training can reduce falls. The safest type depends on your fitness and fracture history.

Why might blood tests be ordered after DEXA?

They can help identify contributors such as vitamin D deficiency, altered calcium balance, thyroid problems or other conditions that may change treatment.
