What should you know about boils on lips?

Boils usually arise from an infected hair follicle, so a lump on hair-bearing skin around the mouth may fit that pattern. A bump on the lip itself can also be a cold sore, blocked gland, cyst, bite reaction, or another skin problem. Tingling followed by small fluid-filled blisters differs from a deep, firm, pus-filled lump. Do not diagnose the cause from appearance alone.

Keep hands clean and avoid squeezing, puncturing, or repeatedly touching the area. Clean surrounding skin gently and use a separate towel. Do not put prescription creams, strong antiseptics, or leftover antibiotics on the lips without clinical advice. Avoid sharing lip products, cups, or cutlery while the lesion is open or draining. A warm compress on nearby skin may soothe a boil, but keep it away from the mouth.

Arrange medical review if swelling is worsening, redness spreads toward the nose or cheek, pain is significant, or the lesion does not improve. Seek urgent help for fever, rapidly increasing facial swelling, trouble opening the mouth, swallowing, or breathing, or swelling near the eye. A clinician can decide whether antibiotics for skin infection or abscess drainage is suitable; do not attempt drainage at home.
