What should you know about blood pressure spirometer?

A spirometer is connected to a mouthpiece. During spirometry, you breathe in fully and then blow out as hard and as long as instructed. The device records airflow and the volume of air exhaled. A blood pressure monitor uses an inflatable cuff around the arm and reports arterial pressure. These tests can be requested together when symptoms such as cough, wheeze or breathlessness need a broader assessment, but one result cannot replace the other.

Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, smoking, meals and strenuous activity before the appointment. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the tester about breathing symptoms, recent illness or difficulty using a mouthpiece. Good technique matters: a firm seal around the mouthpiece and a strong sustained breath help produce a useful tracing. Several attempts may be needed, with rest between them.

A spirometer is a diagnostic tool, not an emergency treatment. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, fainting, chest pressure, new confusion or inability to speak normally because of breathing difficulty. If testing repeatedly causes marked dizziness, chest discomfort or worsening symptoms, stop and tell the clinician immediately.

Ask why spirometry is recommended, whether you should alter any inhalers beforehand, how the result will guide treatment, and whether your blood pressure needs a separate check.
