Bloated, burping and nausea: what it may mean

Short answer
Bloated burping nausea often reflects trapped gas or irritation in the upper digestive system, but infection, reflux, medicines and gallbladder problems can also cause this combination.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Symptoms
- Fullness or swelling, burping and an unsettled stomach

- Severe pain, blood, fainting, confusion or dehydration
The short answer
The symptoms can occur together after eating quickly, drinking fizzy drinks, having a large or rich meal, or swallowing air while chewing gum. A pattern that keeps returning, becomes severe, or comes with other symptoms deserves a clinical assessment.
What these symptoms can mean
Bloating is a feeling of fullness or pressure, sometimes with a visibly swollen abdomen. Burping releases swallowed air or gas from the stomach. Nausea is the unsettled feeling that you may vomit; it does not always lead to vomiting.
Acid reflux may bring burping, nausea, a sour taste or burning behind the breastbone. Gastritis can irritate the stomach lining and cause upper-abdominal discomfort, nausea and early fullness. Food poisoning and gastroenteritis may add vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps or fever. Gallstones can cause nausea with steady pain in the upper right abdomen, particularly after a fatty meal.
These symptoms alone do not identify one condition. A clinician may ask about timing, foods, bowel movements, medicines, alcohol, pregnancy possibility and whether pain or fever is present. Depending on the pattern, they may examine your abdomen and arrange tests.
What you can do now
Take small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you have been vomiting or have diarrhoea. Eat small, plain meals when you feel able, and avoid fizzy drinks, large portions and foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Eat slowly and remain upright after meals.
Keep a brief symptom diary: record meals, medicines, bowel changes, pain location and how long each episode lasts. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, even if you suspect it is contributing. A pharmacist can advise whether an over-the-counter option is suitable for your symptoms and other medicines.
Arrange a routine appointment if symptoms recur, last beyond a short illness, interfere with eating, or are accompanied by unexplained weight loss, ongoing heartburn or a persistent change in bowel habits.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard or markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, vomit containing blood, black stools, fainting, confusion, chest pain, trouble breathing, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and extreme dizziness.
Get prompt advice if you have yellowing of the skin or eyes, high fever, pain under the right ribs, or symptoms after heat exposure with weakness, heavy sweating or confusion. People who are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or living with a significant medical condition may need earlier assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What is the most likely explanation for my symptom pattern? Could any medicine, supplement or food be contributing? Which warning signs should make me seek urgent help? Do I need an examination or tests? What can I eat and drink while this settles?

Questions people ask
Can trapped gas cause nausea?
Yes. Distension and pressure from trapped gas can make the upper abdomen uncomfortable and may trigger nausea, especially after eating quickly or drinking fizzy drinks.
When should bloating and burping be checked?
Arrange a medical review when symptoms keep returning, persist beyond a short illness, affect eating, or occur with weight loss, ongoing heartburn, bowel changes, fever or significant pain.
What should I drink when nausea comes with vomiting?
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If you cannot keep fluids down, become very dizzy, or pass very little urine, seek urgent medical advice.
