Blisters after sunburn: care and warning signs

A blister roof acts as a natural cover for injured skin beneath it. Deliberately popping or peeling it exposes tender tissue and can make contamination easier. Move out of the sun immediately and prevent further ultraviolet exposure while the area recovers.

Ultraviolet injury triggers inflammation and damages skin cells. Fluid can then collect between layers of injured skin, creating clear, fragile bubbles. Redness, heat, tenderness, swelling, and later peeling can accompany a blistering sunburn.

The visible edge may not show the full extent at first, and discomfort can intensify after leaving the sun. Blistering over a broad area, or sunburn in a baby or medically vulnerable person, deserves a lower threshold for clinical advice.

Use a cool, damp cloth or a cool shower; do not apply ice directly. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on unbroken surrounding skin. Avoid oily home remedies that trap heat while the skin still feels hot.

If a blister opens by itself, wash your hands, rinse the area gently, leave attached skin in place, and cover it with a clean non-stick dressing. Change a wet or dirty dressing and keep the wound protected from rubbing and sunlight.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, trouble drinking, very little urine, severe headache, breathing difficulty, or rapidly increasing swelling. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for extensive blistering, eye involvement, severe pain, or blisters on the face, hands, genitals, or a major joint.

Increasing redness beyond the burned area, worsening warmth or pain, pus, cloudy fluid, red streaks, fever, or an unpleasant smell can indicate infection and should be evaluated.

Describe when the exposure occurred, the body areas involved, whether blisters are intact, fluid intake, urine output, dizziness, vomiting, and any medicines already used. Ask how to dress open areas, whether your usual medicines affect healing or sun sensitivity, and when normal skincare can resume.
