PV Bleeding After Menopause

PV is a clinical abbreviation for per vaginam, meaning through the vagina. The term describes where blood is seen, not the underlying cause. A spot, smear, blood-streaked discharge, or flow after menopause all need evaluation.

Bleeding seen at the vagina can arise from fragile vaginal tissue, the cervix, or the womb lining. Polyps and medicine-related bleeding are other possibilities. Abnormal tissue changes are less common but must be excluded through appropriate assessment.

Sometimes blood thought to be PV comes from the urinary tract or bowel. Mention blood in urine, bleeding during a bowel movement, vaginal dryness, discharge, bleeding after sex, pelvic pain, or pressure because these details help locate the source.

If you see “PV bleeding” in your medical notes, it records the symptom and does not mean that a cause has already been found. Contact the service named in your care plan, or arrange a prompt appointment if no follow-up has been organised.

Record the amount, colour, timing, and any trigger such as sex. Take your medicine list, particularly details of hormone therapy, vaginal hormone treatment, and blood thinners. Depending on the examination, further checks may include ultrasound or sampling of the womb lining.

Obtain emergency help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, fainting, severe dizziness, confusion, breathing difficulty, profound weakness, or severe abdominal or pelvic pain. These symptoms can indicate substantial blood loss or another acute problem.

A light, painless episode without these warning signs is not usually an emergency, but it still requires prompt clinical review after menopause. Avoid waiting for a second episode before making contact.

Ask what PV referred to in your record, whether the clinician identified the likely bleeding site, and which tests are planned. Confirm when results will be discussed and what degree of further bleeding, pain, dizziness, or weakness should change the urgency of your care.
