Blastocysts and twin pregnancy

A pregnancy test cannot show how many embryos implanted. Ultrasound is used to identify the number of developing babies and whether they share a placenta or amniotic sac, which guides monitoring during pregnancy.

When more than one embryo is transferred and both implant, the twins generally develop in separate sacs with separate placental tissue, although placentas can appear joined. A single transferred blastocyst can occasionally split, producing identical twins. Symptoms and hormone levels cannot reliably distinguish these pathways.

An early ultrasound looks for gestational sacs, embryos, heart activity when visible, and placental arrangement. Establishing whether twins share a placenta is especially useful because shared circulation changes the monitoring plan. A twin pregnancy places greater demands on the pregnant body and needs obstetric follow-up tailored to its type.

Attend the ultrasound and maternity appointments recommended for you, and bring records from fertility treatment. Your team may review blood pressure, urine, blood count, nutrition, medicines, and fetal growth more closely than in a pregnancy with one baby. Growth scans help assess each baby's development and fluid environment.

Take prescribed supplements and medicines as directed, stay hydrated, eat regular nourishing meals, and discuss safe activity if you have bleeding, pain, cervical concerns, or another medical condition. Birth planning depends on the babies' positions, placental arrangement, gestation, growth, and maternal health; a caesarean section is one possible route rather than an automatic requirement for every twin pregnancy.

Seek prompt maternity advice for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, regular tightening or contractions, persistent pelvic pressure, a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, fever, or persistent vomiting. Once you normally feel movement, report a clear reduction or change according to the instructions from your maternity unit.

Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or chest pain, fainting, a seizure, or major breathing difficulty. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms occur.

Ask whether each baby has a separate placenta and sac, what scan schedule is recommended, and which maternity team will coordinate care. Discuss nutrition and supplements, signs of early labour, where to call outside clinic hours, and how the babies' positions and growth will shape birth planning.
