Blast embryo transfer explained

The phrase is often informal shorthand for blastocyst transfer. The embryo has developed in the laboratory to a stage with a fluid-filled cavity and distinct groups of cells. Transfer may take place in the same treatment cycle as egg collection or in a later cycle after freezing and thawing.

Before transfer, the fertility team reviews embryo development and the uterine lining, then confirms which embryo or embryos are planned for placement. During the procedure, a speculum is used to see the cervix and a fine catheter carries the embryo through the cervix into the uterus. Ultrasound may guide catheter position. The embryo is released in a small amount of fluid, and the catheter is checked after removal.

The procedure places the embryo in the uterine cavity; it does not attach the embryo to the lining. Implantation, if it occurs, happens afterwards. Embryo appearance helps the team make decisions but cannot promise implantation or pregnancy.

Follow the clinic's instructions about bladder filling, medicines and arrival time. Take prescribed progesterone or other support exactly as directed, and contact the team before stopping a dose because of spotting. Bring questions about the embryo selected, catheter guidance and the planned pregnancy test date.

Afterwards, ordinary gentle activity is generally possible unless your clinic advises otherwise. Bed rest does not hold the embryo in place. Avoid starting supplements or medicines without checking compatibility with treatment, and use the clinic's testing schedule because testing too early can give an unclear result.

Mild cramping or light spotting can occur after catheter passage, but symptoms cannot show whether implantation has happened. Contact the fertility team for bleeding heavier than expected, worsening pelvic pain, fever, persistent vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, reduced urination, breathing difficulty, faintness or feeling acutely unwell. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, collapse or breathlessness warrants urgent medical care.

Confirm which medicines continue, what to do after a missed dose, when and how pregnancy testing will occur, and who to contact outside clinic hours. Ask whether any activity restrictions relate specifically to your ovarian response, symptoms or other medical conditions rather than to the transfer alone.
