Black stool without pain: what to know

Some people have no stomach pain when blood is digested before leaving the body. Look for a black, sticky, tar-like appearance rather than relying on discomfort. Iron, bismuth remedies, and dark foods can also change stool colour without causing illness.

Gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and Helicobacter pylori infection are possible upper digestive explanations. A lack of pain does not distinguish these from harmless colour changes.

Check recent foods, supplements, and remedies, and write down whether the stool is formed, sticky, or difficult to flush. Arrange medical advice if the stool stays black, recurs, or looks tarry. Bring a full medicine list, including non-prescription painkillers and iron. Never stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it first.

Seek emergency care for fainting, dizziness, marked weakness, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, confusion, breathlessness, or a rapid heartbeat. These symptoms can indicate blood loss even when the stool is painless.
