Black stool after eating beetroot: what to know
Updated

Short answer
Beetroot can alter stool colour, but genuinely black, sticky or tar-like stool should not be assumed to come from beetroot.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Beetroot pigment
- It may produce red, maroon or purple stool.
- Bleeding pattern
- Black, shiny, sticky or tar-like stool needs medical attention.
What it may mean
Beetroot pigment may make bowel movements look red, maroon or purple, and the change may be easier to notice after a large serving. Black, shiny, sticky stool is a different pattern and can indicate digested blood from the upper digestive tract. Gastritis, peptic ulcer and Helicobacter Pylori Infection can be associated with that type of bleeding, although colour alone cannot diagnose any of them. Iron and bismuth medicines are other common reasons for dark stool.
What to do now
Think about the exact shade, texture and timing, and note whether the change followed beetroot or another dark food. Check medicines and supplements without stopping prescribed treatment on your own. If the stool is truly black, tar-like, recurrent or unexplained, contact a healthcare professional promptly. Take a photo only if you can do so privately and safely; a clear description of the bowel movement and your symptoms is also useful.
When to seek urgent care
Get emergency help for fainting, severe dizziness, marked weakness, breathlessness, a racing heartbeat, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain or repeated black tar-like stools. Seek prompt advice if the colour does not settle after the food has passed or if you feel unwell. Do not rely on beetroot as an explanation when bleeding symptoms are present.
Questions for your doctor
Does this colour fit food pigment or possible digested blood? Could my medicines be contributing? Do I need an examination or blood test? Which changes should lead me to seek urgent care?

Questions people ask
Can beetroot make stool black?
Beetroot more often changes stool toward red, maroon or purple; tar-like black stool needs another explanation considered.
How long should I watch the colour?
Do not wait if the stool is tar-like or you have weakness, dizziness, pain or vomiting blood.
