What should you know about black motion stool?

Motion is another term for a bowel movement. Black stool can be harmlessly caused by iron, bismuth-containing remedies or deeply coloured foods. A tarry, sticky texture is more concerning because blood digested in the upper digestive tract can turn stool black. Gastritis, Helicobacter Pylori Infection and Peptic Ulcer are possible sources, but stool appearance cannot diagnose any of them. Dark brown stool can also look black under poor lighting, so the texture and repeat pattern matter.

Use a well-lit bathroom to check the next movement and write down its colour, texture and timing. Keep packaging or names of recent medicines and supplements, especially iron, bismuth and anti-inflammatory pain relievers. Seek prompt clinical advice if the stool is tarry, keeps recurring, or is not clearly linked to something you ate or took. Do not discontinue prescribed treatment on your own.

Call emergency services for black stool with fainting, dizziness, severe weakness, confusion, breathlessness, severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, or dark granular vomit. These symptoms can signal digestive blood loss. If you feel increasingly unwell or have a history of stomach or bowel disease, arrange urgent assessment rather than waiting for the colour to settle.

Ask whether the appearance could represent melaena, whether your medicines need review, and whether examination or tests are appropriate. Explain when the change started, how many movements you noticed, whether they were sticky or loose, and whether pain, nausea, tiredness or light-headedness accompanied them.
