What should Black men know about male pattern baldness?

The medical term is androgenetic alopecia. Ethnicity does not make every receding hairline the same condition: tight styling, breakage, scalp inflammation, and scarring forms of hair loss can create different patterns and require different management.

Androgenetic alopecia presents with follicles gradually producing finer, shorter hairs. The change often appears at both temples, the front hairline, or the crown while the sides and back remain denser. A family history can support the diagnosis but is not required.

Short broken hairs, soreness after braids or loc retwisting, bumps, scale, itching, or shiny smooth areas point toward another process or a second problem. A dermatologist can examine the scalp closely and may test hairs or take a small biopsy when the pattern is unclear.

Take baseline photographs of the hairline and crown with the same hairstyle and lighting. Reduce sustained pull from tight cornrows, braids, extensions, durags, or loc maintenance if they cause pain or leave bumps. Gentle detangling and less heat can limit breakage, but hair-care changes do not reverse inherited follicle miniaturisation.

A clinician may discuss topical minoxidil or finasteride treatment after reviewing medical history, expected benefits, side effects, and the need for continued use. Hair transplantation can redistribute suitable donor hairs after the diagnosis and loss pattern are stable enough for planning. Laser cap therapy is another option, although response varies.

Book a dermatology appointment if loss is sudden, patchy, painful, itchy, scaly, or accompanied by pus-filled bumps. Prompt review is also sensible when the scalp looks shiny, the follicle openings seem absent, or thinning spreads from areas exposed to traction, because scarring hair loss can destroy follicles.

Seek medical advice before starting tablets marketed for hair loss, particularly if you take other medicines or have sexual, fertility, mood, prostate, or liver concerns. Report troublesome symptoms that begin during treatment rather than stopping or combining medicines without guidance.

Ask whether the pattern fits androgenetic alopecia, traction, breakage, or scarring loss; which areas still have active follicles; how progress will be photographed; and what side effects should trigger contact. If considering surgery, ask about donor density, curl pattern, hairline design, scarring tendency, and ongoing loss behind transplanted hairs.
