Very Dark Under-Eye Circles: Causes, Care and Warning Signs

The colour may look deeper in certain lighting and on different skin tones. Whether the area is flat, hollow, itchy, swollen or newly changed is more informative than the word “black.”

Brown-grey colour that remains in even light can come from melanin in the skin. A blue-purple tone may reflect vessels showing through thin eyelid skin. Tear-trough hollows cast a shadow that shifts when the lighting or viewing angle changes.

Rubbing from allergy or eczema can inflame the eyelids and leave darker pigment afterward. Family traits, sun exposure and changes in facial volume can overlap, which is why one treatment does not suit every under-eye circle.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser around irritated skin, avoid rubbing and protect the area from sunlight with shade, sunglasses and a suitable sunscreen that does not sting the eyes. Treating active eyelid irritation comes before cosmetic lightening.

A dermatologist can determine whether pigment, vessels or contour contributes most. Pigment-directed skin care will not fill a hollow, while filler changes contour rather than removing pigment. The thin under-eye area needs conservative product use and treatment by an appropriately qualified clinician.

Book a clinical review if darkening appears suddenly, affects only one side, continues to worsen, or comes with persistent rash, eyelid swelling, pain or discharge. Urgent assessment is appropriate for a painful swollen eye area, fever, impaired eye movement or any change in vision.

If tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness or other general symptoms accompany a new change, mention them so the clinician can assess health beyond the skin.

Ask which component is dominant—pigment, visible vessels, irritation or hollowing—and what outcome is realistic for that component. Discuss sensitive-skin products, any history of eczema or allergy, and the specific risks of procedures close to the eye before choosing treatment.
