What to Know About Dark Bed Bug Bites

The colour alone cannot confirm bed bugs. Their bites are often itchy, raised marks that appear in clusters or lines after sleep, but other insects and skin conditions can look similar.

A dark centre can be dried blood or a tiny crust where the skin was scratched. A broader brown or grey mark may be pigment left behind after the redness and swelling fade. Infection is more concerning when darkness is accompanied by increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or rapidly spreading redness.

Look for environmental clues as well: small blood smears on bedding, dark specks along mattress seams, shed insect skins, or live flat insects. Skin marks without these clues do not establish the cause.

Wash the area gently, apply a cool compress, and avoid picking or scratching. Keep fingernails short to reduce skin damage. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or a suitable topical anti-inflammatory treatment fits your symptoms and medical history.

Inspect sleeping areas and arrange professional pest control if bed bugs are found. Treating the skin without removing the insects allows new bites to continue. Do not apply household insecticide directly to your body.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or a rapidly worsening widespread reaction. Arrange prompt assessment if a mark becomes very painful, hot, increasingly swollen, drains pus, develops spreading redness, or is accompanied by fever.

A clinician should also review persistent dark lesions, unexplained recurrent bites, or severe itching that disrupts sleep, because the diagnosis or treatment may need reconsideration.
