Bite with spreading redness: what to watch for

Outline the edge with a pen and note the time, provided the skin is intact. This makes continued expansion easier to recognise. Seek urgent help if the redness advances quickly or comes with severe pain, fever, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or confusion.

A bite can trigger a local immune reaction, producing warmth, itching, puffiness, and redness around the puncture. Scratching can further irritate the skin and create tiny breaks through which bacteria can enter.

Cellulitis commonly presents with an enlarging area of red, warm, tender, or swollen skin. Pus, red streaks travelling away from the bite, or increasing tenderness add concern for infection. Appearance alone cannot reliably separate a strong bite reaction from infection, so the pattern of change and accompanying symptoms matter.

Wash the area gently with soap and water, remove any visible stinger by scraping it sideways, and apply a cool wrapped compress. Elevating an affected arm or leg can ease swelling. Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or repeatedly rubbing the bite, and keep fingernails away from itchy skin.

Record whether the border, warmth, pain, swelling, or drainage changes. A clinician can examine the skin and decide whether treatment for bacterial infection is appropriate; antibiotics do not treat a simple inflammatory reaction. Do not use leftover antibiotics or another person's prescription.

Arrange prompt assessment when the marked border keeps moving outward, the area becomes more painful or hot, pus appears, red streaks develop, or you feel feverish or unwell. Earlier assessment is sensible if immune suppression, poorly controlled diabetes, reduced circulation, or significant leg swelling could make infection harder to contain.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, throat tightness, widespread hives with dizziness, collapse, confusion, or rapidly worsening facial or eye-area swelling. These features can signal a severe allergic reaction or a fast-moving infection and should not be watched at home.

Ask whether the pattern fits inflammation or cellulitis, whether any retained stinger or foreign material is visible, and how the border should change after treatment begins. Mention when the bite occurred, possible insect or animal exposure, medicines and allergies, tetanus vaccination history, and any fever, drainage, streaking, numbness, or reduced movement.
