Short answer

A Biodex isokinetic system measures or trains muscle force while controlling movement speed, giving clinicians structured information about strength and performance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Device type
An isokinetic dynamometer used for controlled joint testing and exercise.
Main outputs
Force and performance information across a selected movement range.
Clinical context
Results complement examination and functional testing rather than replacing them.

Direct answer

The machine can be configured for a particular joint and movement. It records how force changes through the tested range, but the results are only one part of deciding whether someone can progress rehabilitation, work duties, or sport.

What happens during isokinetic testing

You are positioned in a chair or testing frame and secured so the target joint lines up with the machine's moving arm. After practice efforts, you push or pull through an instructed range. The device adjusts resistance to your effort while limiting the movement to the selected speed.

Clinicians may compare the involved limb with the other side, examine muscle balance around a joint, and look for changes across repeated assessments. Side-to-side similarity alone does not prove readiness, because both limbs may be deconditioned and sport also demands coordination, endurance, confidence, and task-specific control.

Preparing for a useful session

Tell the physiotherapist about recent surgery, current pain or swelling, joint instability, medical restrictions, and medicines that affect how you feel during exertion. Wear clothing that allows the joint to move and complete the recommended warm-up. Follow instructions consistently, because positioning, effort, and familiarity can influence the measurements.

During training, use the assigned range, speed, and effort rather than trying to beat a previous score. Afterward, note any delayed increase in pain, swelling, or loss of function and report it before the next progression.

When testing should stop

Tell the supervising clinician immediately if you develop sharp joint pain, a feeling of giving way, sudden swelling, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or new numbness. The session can be stopped and the setup or your condition assessed before any further effort.

Seek urgent medical care if chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or a new cold, pale, weak, or numb limb persists after activity. A routine performance test should not take priority over these warning signs.

Questions for understanding your results

Ask which movement and muscles are being assessed, how pain or limited range affected the test, and what the key findings change in your programme. Clarify what other measures will inform return-to-sport decisions and when repeating the assessment would provide useful information.

Questions people ask

Is Biodex testing the same as a gym strength test?

No. The device controls movement speed and records force through the selected range while the clinician standardises positioning and instructions.

Does passing an isokinetic test clear me for sport?

Not by itself. Readiness also depends on symptoms, joint examination, movement skills, conditioning, confidence, and the demands of your sport.

Can the machine be used for exercise as well as testing?

Yes. A clinician can set controlled movement and resistance conditions for training when these suit the rehabilitation plan.
