Wearing a binder after liposuction

Compression garments can support healing tissues, help manage swelling and make movement feel more secure. They do not determine the result on their own, and tighter compression is not automatically better. The appropriate garment depends on the treated area, incision sites, skin sensation and your surgeon’s technique.

A binder spreads gentle pressure over the treated area while early fluid and swelling settle. It may be an abdominal wrap or a shaped garment. Its edges should not roll into a narrow band, and seams should not rub an incision. The skin beneath should remain its usual colour and temperature.

Temporary swelling, bruising, firmness and altered sensation can occur after liposuction. Because numb skin may not register excessive pressure, visual skin checks are useful. A binder cannot treat a fluid collection, infection, blood clot or wound problem; those require assessment.

Follow the written schedule from your surgical team, including instructions for showering, laundering and changing garments. Fasten the binder evenly so it feels supportive without restricting a full breath or normal movement. Smooth out folds and check pressure points whenever you put it back on.

Keep the garment clean and dry, and avoid placing creams on incisions unless approved. Contact the team if swelling changes and the fit becomes loose or painfully tight; you may need a different size or stage of garment. Do not add padding or double compression without guidance.

Remove or loosen the garment and contact the surgical team promptly if it causes increasing pain, new numbness, skin discoloration, blistering, deep grooves or breathing restriction. Seek urgent care for chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, sudden one-sided calf swelling, heavy bleeding, rapidly worsening swelling, or fever with an increasingly red or draining wound.

Confirm which garment and size to use, how snug it should feel, whether it stays on overnight, and when its schedule changes. Ask how to inspect numb skin, which incision changes are expected, and whom to contact outside clinic hours if the fit or swelling changes.
