Bilastine for urticaria: benefits, use and safety

It blocks the action of histamine, a chemical involved in itch, redness and swelling. It can control symptoms but does not remove every possible trigger or explain why hives are occurring. Take it exactly as directed by your prescriber or the medicine leaflet.

Urticaria produces raised weals that can change shape, fade in one location and appear in another. Bilastine is intended to dampen the histamine signal behind this pattern and the accompanying itch. It is not a corticosteroid and does not treat breathing obstruction or circulatory collapse.

Some people with hives also develop angioedema, which is deeper swelling often affecting eyelids, lips, hands or feet. Bilastine may be part of the management plan, but tongue or throat swelling and breathing difficulty require emergency care rather than waiting for a tablet to work.

Follow the timing and food instructions supplied with your product because food and fruit juice can affect absorption. Do not increase the dose, combine antihistamines or stop a longer treatment plan without clinical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the leaflet instead of doubling the next dose.

Tell a pharmacist or doctor about kidney problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding and every medicine or supplement you use. Headache, dizziness, tiredness or sleepiness can occur. Until you know your response, avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel less alert, and avoid alcohol if it makes those effects worse.

Contact your clinician if hives remain poorly controlled, return frequently, or are accompanied by ongoing skin swelling despite taking bilastine as instructed. A review can confirm the diagnosis, look for relevant triggers or medicines, and adjust the treatment plan safely.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, confusion or rapidly worsening widespread symptoms. Seek prompt advice after a suspected medicine reaction, especially if there is blistering, skin peeling, mouth involvement or a rash with fever.

Ask how and when your particular bilastine product should be taken, what to do after a missed dose, and which side effects should prompt stopping it. It is also useful to ask how long to continue treatment, whether other medicines interact, and what action plan to follow if swelling appears.
