What to know about very swollen lips

Check whether the swelling appeared suddenly, whether the tongue or throat is involved, and whether there are hives, wheezing, dizziness or faintness. Those associated symptoms matter more than the visible size of the lips.

Swelling limited to one tender area may develop after a bite, dental problem, piercing, injury or local infection. Itching and hives can accompany an allergic reaction. Some medicines can cause deeper swelling without an itchy rash.

Angioedema commonly presents with sudden swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue or other soft tissues. It may be allergic, medicine-related, recurrent without a clear trigger, or linked to an inherited disorder. Lip swelling alone cannot establish which cause is present.

Stop using any new lip, skin or dental product and avoid suspected food triggers until assessed. A cool compress wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort after minor irritation or injury. Do not place ice directly on the lips, squeeze a tender lump or take someone else's medicine.

Note what you ate, touched and took before the swelling began, including prescription medicines and supplements. Photographing the change can help if it settles before an appointment. If you already have a prescribed emergency allergy plan, follow it and still seek the level of care specified in that plan.

Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling occurs with tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, noisy breathing, a hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, blue or pale lips, confusion, collapse or severe dizziness. Do not drive yourself if breathing may be affected.

Obtain prompt clinical advice when swelling is rapidly worsening, began after a new medicine, follows a dental infection, or comes with fever, spreading redness, pus or significant pain. Recurrent episodes also need review even when they resolve, because prevention depends on finding the trigger or swelling pattern.

Tell the clinician how quickly the swelling developed, which areas were involved and whether hives or abdominal symptoms occurred. Ask if a current medicine could be responsible, whether allergy assessment is appropriate, and what written action plan to follow if swelling returns.
