Big Lump Under the Skin on the Chin

Tenderness, warmth, a visible pore, recent shaving, dental symptoms, and the speed of change can narrow the possibilities. Avoid forcing out material from a lump that sits beneath the skin.

A painful lump developing with other spots may be a deep acne nodule. A boil generally presents with local heat, redness, tenderness, and sometimes pus. A cyst can form a rounded bump and may have a tiny central opening; it can become sore if inflamed. Irritation around a beard hair can follow shaving.

Not every chin swelling starts in the skin. Tooth or gum infection may cause lower-face swelling with dental pain, a bad taste, or pain on biting. A persistent pearly, crusted, bleeding, or ulcerated surface lesion has a different pattern and needs a skin examination.

Clean the chin gently, avoid abrasive scrubs, and do not squeeze the lump. Pressure can rupture an inflamed structure beneath the surface and increase swelling or scarring. Use clean shaving equipment and avoid shaving directly across broken or very tender skin. A warm compress can soothe a small superficial inflamed area.

Book an appointment when the bump persists, repeatedly returns, becomes larger, or leaves a firm area after inflammation settles. Treatment depends on the diagnosis; an injection used for selected inflamed skin lesions is not suitable for every lump.

Get urgent medical or dental care if swelling spreads quickly across the jaw or neck, you develop fever, or there is trouble swallowing, breathing, opening the mouth, or handling saliva. These features can accompany a spreading infection and should not wait for a routine skin visit.

Prompt review is also warranted for severe pain, rapidly increasing redness, drainage near the mouth, or swelling linked with toothache. Arrange a dermatology assessment for unexplained bleeding, crusting, ulceration, fixation, or steady growth.

Tell the clinician about acne, shaving, dental pain, previous lumps, skin products, and anything applied to the area. Ask whether the problem is within the skin or connected to a tooth, whether a procedure is needed, and how to reduce the chance of a mark.
