Bed bug bites on people: reactions, treatment and next steps

One household member may develop itchy raised marks while another has no obvious skin change. Bumps may be isolated, grouped or roughly linear on areas uncovered in bed. That variation means neither the pattern nor the absence of marks can confirm or exclude an infestation.

Visible marks reflect a person's response to substances introduced during feeding, not a measure of how many bugs are present. Reactions can also appear at different times, making it hard to match every mark to a particular night. Bed bug bites can resemble hives, eczema, scabies and bites from other insects.

Search the mattress edges, bed structure, bedside furniture and luggage for live bugs, pale cast skins, eggs or dark spotting. Bed bugs can be carried into clean homes and do not reflect a person's hygiene. The skin reaction is not contagious.

Use gentle cleansing and a cool compress to settle irritated skin. Resist scratching and keep damaged areas clean. A pharmacist or doctor can help choose an itch treatment, such as an antihistamine or topical corticosteroid, after considering age, pregnancy, other conditions and current medicines.

Avoid moving unsealed belongings into another room because this can spread insects. Bag washable items, use heat where fabrics permit and have the home assessed by a trained pest-control provider. Everyone in the household should check their sleeping spaces even when only one person has marks.

Trouble breathing, fainting or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat requires emergency help. Arrange prompt evaluation for fever, rapidly enlarging redness, increasing heat or pain, drainage, blistering or red streaks from a scratched area. Non-urgent clinical advice can help when itching prevents sleep, reactions are extensive, or repeated marks continue despite professional control of the sleeping environment.

Describe the sequence of marks rather than relying on a single snapshot, and note who in the household is affected. Ask what competing diagnoses need consideration, how to recognise infection and which treatment is compatible with your circumstances. Photographs of the skin and any confirmed specimen or clear environmental image can add useful context; do not bring a loose insect into a clinic.
