What do bed bug bites look like?

Some develop a darker central dot, surrounding swelling, a blister, or a hive-like welt. On deeper skin tones, redness may look purple, brown, or subtle, making texture and swelling easier to notice than colour.

People respond differently to the insects' saliva, so occupants of the same room may show dissimilar marks or no visible reaction. Lesions can also emerge after a delay, which makes the apparent timing misleading.

Mosquito and flea bites, hives, folliculitis, contact dermatitis, and scabies can resemble this pattern. Confirmation relies more on finding bed bugs or their traces near a sleeping area than on matching a photograph of a rash.

Take clear photographs before applying coloured creams, then note itch, onset, new locations, travel, and where you slept. Wash gently, use a cool compress, keep fingernails short, and avoid opening blisters or picking crusts.

Inspect mattress seams, frames, headboards, and nearby furniture with good lighting. If you find a suspected insect, preserve it in a sealed container or take a close photograph; do not crush it onto the skin.

Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or face, faintness, or a rapidly worsening severe reaction. Obtain prompt care when lesions become increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or pus-filled, or when fever and red streaks occur.

Arrange an examination for widespread blistering, involvement of the eyes or mouth, unexplained bruising, or a rash that keeps spreading without evidence of bed bugs. These features may require a different diagnosis and treatment plan.

Ask which features support an insect reaction, what alternatives fit the rash, whether broken areas are infected, and which treatment is appropriate for its location. Share any insect photographs and a list of new skin products, medicines, or recent accommodation.
