How long do bed bug bites last?

The exact course differs because skin sensitivity varies. Some people notice little reaction, while others develop itchy raised areas that remain visible after the strongest irritation has eased.

Redness and itching may begin after a delay rather than immediately after feeding. A mark can flatten gradually, then leave temporary darker or lighter colour, particularly when it has been rubbed or scratched.

Fresh bumps appearing on different mornings can reflect continued exposure in the room. They do not necessarily mean that one original bite is spreading across the body. Other insects and inflammatory rashes can create a similar timeline, so duration by itself does not confirm the cause.

Wash gently, place a cool compress over itchy areas, and use fragrance-free moisturiser if the surface feels dry. Covering a frequently scratched spot with a clean, non-stick dressing may reduce further injury.

Check the sleeping area and address an infestation at the same time, otherwise new reactions can make healing seem unusually long. Photograph the rash in consistent light and note where new marks occur; this gives a clinician a clearer timeline if assessment becomes necessary.

Get urgent help if bites are followed by breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening widespread symptoms. Seek timely care for increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, pus, red streaking, fever, or open sores, as these can accompany infection after scratching.

Book a routine review when marks are not steadily improving, sleep is being disrupted by itch, or fresh lesions continue despite confirmed pest control. The diagnosis may need reconsideration if no insects or environmental evidence are found.

Ask what features distinguish bites from eczema, hives, scabies, or contact dermatitis; whether infection is present; and how long to use any recommended itch medicine. Mention all treatments already tried and whether anyone else in the home has similar marks.
