Bed bug bites on the chest: what to know

Marks may be red or pink, slightly swollen, and grouped or arranged in a loose line. They can occur where sleepwear leaves skin exposed, although bites may also sit beneath loose clothing. Some people develop noticeable itching, while others have little skin reaction.

Appearance cannot reliably separate bed bug bites from mosquito bites, contact dermatitis, folliculitis, or another rash. Clues in the sleeping area, such as live insects, shed skins, or dark spotting around mattress seams, make an environmental source more plausible.

Wash the area gently, use a cool compress, and avoid scratching. Keeping fingernails short reduces skin damage. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or a topical corticosteroid suits your symptoms, age, medical conditions, and other medicines.

Skin care will not remove bed bugs. Inspect sleeping areas carefully and arrange appropriate pest control if infestation signs are found. Avoid spraying insecticide directly onto your skin or using household chemicals as a skin treatment.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction. Arrange a clinical review if the area becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or starts draining pus, or if you develop fever. A persistent, worsening, blistering, or uncertain chest rash also deserves assessment.

Ask whether the pattern fits bites or another chest rash, whether scratched areas show infection, and which itch treatment is suitable for you. Mention when the marks appeared, recent travel or overnight stays, whether anyone sharing the room has marks, and any new soaps, medicines, or clothing.
