Beard ringworm treatment: what to expect

Beard ringworm often needs a prescription oral antifungal because the infection involves facial hair follicles. A clinician may examine affected hairs or take a scraping to confirm fungus and rule out bacterial folliculitis. A cream alone may be considered for a mild, superficial patch, but it may not reach infection deeper around the hairs.

Also called tinea barbae, this fungal infection affects hair-bearing skin of the beard or moustache. It can cause a red or scaly rash, broken or loose hairs, crusts, pus-filled bumps, and tender swollen areas. An intensely inflamed lump is sometimes called a kerion and can leave scarring or areas of hair loss if treatment is delayed.

The appearance can overlap with bacterial infection, shaving irritation, and other facial rashes. Confirmation is especially useful before starting tablets, after treatment has failed, or when the area is very inflamed.

Take the prescribed antifungal exactly as directed and complete the course even when the skin starts to look clearer. Tell the prescriber about other medicines, liver problems, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, because these details can affect which oral treatment is suitable. Do not apply a steroid cream unless a clinician specifically includes it in the plan; steroid use by itself can hide the rash while allowing fungus to spread.

Avoid shaving over sore skin until it settles. Do not share razors, clippers, towels, or face cloths, and clean grooming equipment after use. Wash your hands after touching the area. Mention recent contact with an animal that has patchy fur or a skin problem, as the animal may also need veterinary assessment.

Arrange a clinical assessment if a beard-area rash is inflamed, involves the hairs, produces pus or crusting, or does not improve with an appropriate topical antifungal. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness or swelling, severe pain, fever, swelling near an eye, or spreading redness. Earlier review is also sensible if your immune system is weakened or if you develop dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or a widespread new rash while taking an oral antifungal.

Ask whether a hair or skin sample is needed, whether the infection has reached the follicles, and whether topical treatment has any supporting role. You can also ask how to take the medicine, which side effects require contact, whether your current medicines interact with it, and when the beard skin should be checked again.
