Rodent Ulcer and Basal Cell Carcinoma

The term refers to the lesion's historically described eroded appearance; it has nothing to do with rodents or infection from an animal. Diagnosis requires clinical assessment and often a biopsy.

Basal cell carcinoma may present as a shiny or pearly bump, a flat scaly patch, a scar-like area, or a sore that crusts, bleeds, partly heals, and then returns. Some lesions contain pigment and can look brown, blue, or dark rather than pink.

An ulcer can form as the tumour disrupts the skin surface. BCC often grows locally, and continued growth can involve deeper tissue or important structures, especially around the eyelids, nose, lips, and ears.

Arrange an examination rather than repeatedly covering or treating a non-healing spot as a minor wound. Note when it appeared and whether its size, surface, colour, bleeding, or tenderness has changed. A clinician may inspect it with magnification and take a biopsy.

Treatment is chosen according to the confirmed type, size, depth, border, location, previous treatment, and your general health. Surgical excision or Mohs surgery may be advised; selected superficial lesions may be considered for a cream or photodynamic therapy, while radiotherapy suits particular circumstances.

Protect the surrounding skin from ultraviolet exposure and keep future skin-check appointments, because care also includes looking for additional sun-related lesions.

Seek prompt medical review when a sore will not heal, repeatedly bleeds without being knocked, becomes increasingly painful, grows quickly, or develops spreading redness or discharge. A new lesion close to the eye that affects vision or eyelid movement also needs timely assessment.

Heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm continuous pressure needs urgent care. Do not wait for pain before arranging a check, because an early BCC may cause little discomfort.

Ask whether biopsy has confirmed the subtype, how clearly defined the edges are, and which treatment offers suitable margin control at that body site. Discuss wound closure, scar placement, pathology results, follow-up, and what change near the treated area should trigger another visit.
