This rare form of congenital ichthyosis reflects a genetic change that affects how the outer skin layer forms. Scale is concentrated over warmer central body areas that a bathing suit might cover, while cooler limbs and parts of the face may be less involved. The condition can become apparent in early life and is not caused by bathing, swimwear, poor hygiene, or an infection. Heat may make the scaling more noticeable because the affected skin process is temperature sensitive.

Use short lukewarm baths or showers and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser only where needed. Pat the skin dry, then apply a rich emollient while it is still slightly damp. Reapply when tightness or scale returns. A dermatologist may suggest a scale-softening cream, but stronger products can sting cracked skin and require age-appropriate guidance. Breathable clothing, a comfortable indoor temperature, and avoiding overheating may reduce aggravation. Do not scrape adherent scale, because this can cause fissures and inflammation.

A dermatologist should assess unexplained widespread scaling, particularly in a baby or child, to confirm the diagnosis and exclude other inherited skin disorders. Seek care sooner for painful cracks, oozing, spreading redness, fever, reduced sweating with overheating, or difficulty maintaining a comfortable body temperature. Review is also worthwhile when itching disrupts sleep or the current moisturising plan no longer controls tightness and scale.

Ask which emollient texture and scale-softening ingredients suit the affected person's age and skin condition. Discuss how to recognise infection, manage hot weather, and adjust care when the skin cracks. Genetic counselling may help a family understand inheritance and testing choices, and the clinician can explain whether other relatives should be offered an assessment.
