What does a small Bartholin cyst mean?

Bartholin glands are located beside the lower vaginal opening. When a duct closes, fluid can collect and form a small, one-sided lump. It may be soft or tense and may cause pressure during movement or sex. Size alone cannot tell whether infection is present: increasing soreness, warmth, redness, or pus are more useful warning signs. A small swelling can also have another cause, so a clinician should assess a new lump that remains or changes.

If it is comfortable, monitor the area without poking it. Gentle washing, breathable underwear, and warm water can support comfort. Avoid home attempts to pop or drain it. If the lump interferes with sitting, walking, or sex, arrange a gynaecology appointment. The clinician may recommend observation, drainage, or marsupialisation depending on the examination and whether the problem has returned.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly for new or worsening pain, a hot or red lump, pus, feverishness, or difficulty walking or sitting. Urgent care is appropriate if severe pain or rapidly spreading redness is accompanied by feeling very unwell.
