Living with a Bartholin cyst for years

A stable cyst without pain may cause little disruption. Duration alone does not confirm that a lump is harmless, and changes in size, texture, skin or symptoms are reasons for a fresh assessment.

The cyst forms when a small duct near the vaginal opening remains blocked and gland fluid cannot drain normally. It can fluctuate as fluid accumulates or escapes. If an opening seals again after drainage, another swelling may develop in the same area.

A long-standing lump may also be a different vulval condition that resembles a Bartholin cyst. A clinician considers its exact location, mobility, firmness, skin appearance and your stage of life. A new Bartholin-area mass after menopause needs timely evaluation even when it does not hurt.

Arrange an examination if the lump has never been professionally identified, has lasted despite self-care or keeps returning. Track changes in tenderness, discharge, size and the effect on sitting, exercise and sex. Avoid squeezing or puncturing it, even if previous episodes drained on their own.

Observation may be reasonable after confirmation when a cyst is small and symptom-free. If it repeatedly becomes painful, infected or disruptive, treatment may create a drainage route that is less likely to seal immediately. The choice depends on the examination, previous treatment and your preferences.

Seek prompt care if a familiar lump suddenly enlarges, becomes severely painful, feels hot, develops spreading redness or drains pus, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Difficulty walking, sitting or passing urine also calls for timely help.

Book an assessment for hardening, fixation, irregular shape, unexplained bleeding, ulceration, changed skin colour or persistent enlargement. These features require examination because the label given to an old lump may no longer explain its current appearance.

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, whether any test or sample is indicated, and what would make observation appropriate. For repeated episodes, discuss the differences between simple drainage and a procedure that keeps an opening for drainage, including recovery, recurrence and effects on daily activities.
