Bartholin cysts on both sides: what to know
Updated

Short answer
Swelling on both sides can involve the Bartholin glands, but a clinician should confirm the cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can Bartholin cysts occur on both sides?
Bartholin glands sit near either side of the vaginal opening. A blocked duct can form a cyst, and infection can turn a cyst into a painful abscess. Because other vulval conditions can also cause paired or widespread swelling, the location alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
What swelling on both sides may mean
A Bartholin cyst is often felt as a soft or firm lump low beside the vaginal opening. Swelling on both sides may represent blocked ducts, but irritation, skin inflammation, another type of cyst, or swelling of nearby tissue can feel similar. Pain, warmth, redness, pus, or feeling unwell raises concern for infection rather than a quiet, uninfected cyst.
An examination can identify whether each lump lies in the expected gland area and whether drainage or testing is appropriate. A new or unusual vulval lump deserves assessment, particularly when it is persistent, firm, changing, or difficult to locate clearly.
What you can do now
Arrange a routine appointment if both sides are swollen, even when discomfort is mild. Until then, a warm sitz bath or warm compress may ease tenderness and encourage natural drainage. Keep the area clean and dry, choose loose clothing, and use a simple pain medicine only if it is normally safe for you.
Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut either lump. This can injure delicate tissue and introduce infection. If a clinician confirms recurrent or troublesome Bartholin cysts, they may discuss drainage options, including marsupialisation, based on the examination and your history.
When to seek prompt medical care
Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, foul-smelling drainage, difficulty sitting or walking, or feeling generally unwell. These features can accompany an abscess that needs medical drainage or antibiotics.
Get urgent help if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, or pain becomes suddenly intense. If you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or managing poorly controlled diabetes, contact a clinician early when infection is suspected because assessment may need to happen sooner.
Questions to ask at your appointment
Ask whether both swellings are in the Bartholin gland area, whether either looks infected, and whether another vulval condition could explain them. You can also ask what changes to monitor, whether a sample is needed, and which drainage approach would suit you if symptoms persist or return.

Questions people ask
Does swelling on both sides confirm Bartholin cysts?
No. Bartholin ducts can be blocked, but irritation, skin conditions, and other vulval lumps can resemble cysts. A clinical examination can clarify the cause.
Can I use warm water for comfort?
A warm sitz bath or compress may soothe mild tenderness. Stop if it irritates the skin, and seek care if pain or swelling is worsening.
Would both sides need a procedure?
Not necessarily. Treatment depends on the diagnosis, discomfort, infection, drainage, and whether the problem keeps returning. A clinician assesses each side before recommending a procedure.
