Bald Head Dark Spots: What They May Mean and What to Do

Bald head dark spots can result from sun exposure, healing irritation, inflammation, or a superficial fungal infection; examine changes and arrange a dermatology assessment for a new, changing, symptomatic, or unusual mark. Hair loss leaves more scalp exposed to ultraviolet light, so existing pigment changes may become easier to notice. A photograph taken in consistent lighting can help you track whether a spot is changing.

A flat brown or grey area may be sun-related pigmentation, including sun spots, or melasma. Pigment left after a pimple, scratch, razor bump, dermatitis flare, or other irritation is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These marks can remain after the original problem has settled.

If the area is scaly, itchy, or made up of lighter and darker patches, a clinician may consider tinea versicolor or another scalp condition. A spot that is raised, crusted, bleeding, tender, rapidly changing, or distinctly different from nearby marks needs direct examination. Dark colour alone cannot identify the cause, and a symptom page about dark patches should not be used to diagnose a particular condition.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed scalp skin and reapply according to the product directions, especially during prolonged outdoor time. A hat can add physical protection. Avoid picking, harsh scrubbing, unprescribed bleaching products, and close shaving over a sore or inflamed area. Choose gentle cleansing and allow irritated skin to recover.

Arrange a dermatology visit if the cause is unclear, the spots persist, or you want treatment. The clinician may inspect the surface, ask about sun exposure and recent inflammation, and decide whether testing is needed. Once the cause is known, options can include a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment; these are not suitable for every pigment pattern or active infection.

Book an assessment promptly for a mark that changes in size, shape, colour, or surface; develops an irregular border; repeatedly crusts or bleeds; or does not heal. Seek sooner if there is significant pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or a patch of hair loss with scaling. A clinician can distinguish pigment from an inflamed, infectious, or potentially more serious lesion by examining it rather than relying on appearance in a photograph.

Ask what features suggest sun-related pigment, post-inflammatory change, infection, or another diagnosis; whether the area needs a closer examination or test; which scalp products are appropriate; and when it is safe to consider a cosmetic treatment. Mention any itching, scaling, bleeding, tenderness, new medicines, recent skin injury, or change in your hair-loss pattern.
