What should you know about bacteria causing sore throat?

A bacterial throat infection can inflame the tonsils and nearby tissues, causing pain when swallowing, swollen neck glands, fever, or white patches. Viral infections such as Common Cold, Influenza, COVID-19, and Glandular Fever can also cause throat pain. Allergic Rhinitis may lead to irritation from drainage, while Acid Reflux can irritate the throat without an infection. Tonsillitis describes inflamed tonsils and may be viral or bacterial. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Warm drinks or salt-water gargles may soothe irritation. A clinician can examine the throat and decide whether a swab or other test is useful. Antibiotics are reserved for appropriate bacterial infections and do not treat viral causes. Do not share utensils, and wash hands often while fever or active respiratory symptoms continue.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, drooling because swallowing is impossible, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, neck swelling, or inability to drink. Arrange medical review for persistent fever, worsening pain, dehydration, a spreading rash, or symptoms that are not improving. A child who is unusually sleepy or struggling to swallow needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the examination suggests a bacterial infection, whether testing is needed, which pain relief is suitable, and when to return if swallowing or breathing becomes harder.
