Using a TENS unit for back pain

Short answer
A TENS unit may temporarily ease some back pain by sending mild electrical pulses through skin electrodes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can a TENS unit help back pain?
The sensation should feel strong but comfortable, not sharp or burning. Relief varies, and the device does not treat the underlying cause of pain.
What the device does
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A small battery-powered controller sends pulses through adhesive pads placed on intact skin near the painful area. These pulses can alter how pain signals are perceived while the unit is operating.
A response to TENS cannot identify why the back hurts. New pain after injury, pain spreading into a leg, or persistent symptoms still need assessment based on their pattern and associated signs.
How to try it safely
Read the device instructions, switch it off before positioning the pads, and place the pads around rather than directly over the painful spot. Start at low intensity and increase only to a comfortable tingling. Check the skin during use and stop if irritation develops.
Do not apply pads to broken, infected, numb, or irritated skin, the front of the neck, or across the chest. Keep the unit dry, and do not use it while sleeping, driving, bathing, or operating machinery.
Seek clinical advice before use if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electrical device, epilepsy, altered sensation, a heart-rhythm condition, or pregnancy. A physiotherapist can demonstrate pad placement for the exact painful region.
When back pain needs prompt care
Get urgent medical help for back pain with new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or buttocks, marked or worsening leg weakness, fever with feeling very unwell, or pain after a major injury. Do not let temporary relief from TENS delay evaluation of these signs.
Arrange a routine assessment if pain keeps returning, disrupts sleep, spreads below the knee, or limits walking and daily activity. Stop TENS and seek advice if it causes persistent skin changes, dizziness, or an unpleasant electrical sensation.
Useful questions for your clinician
Ask which back structures may be producing your symptoms, whether TENS is suitable with your medical devices and medicines, where the pads should sit, and how to combine symptom relief with movement or rehabilitation. Bring the unit or its manual if you want its controls checked.

Questions people ask
Does TENS cure the cause of back pain?
No. It may change pain perception while in use, but it does not repair an injury or establish a diagnosis.
Can I place TENS pads directly over my spine?
Follow the device and clinician instructions; pads are generally positioned around the painful region so current passes through the intended area without crossing the chest.
Should TENS feel painful?
No. Reduce the intensity or stop the device if the pulses sting, burn, or trigger an uncomfortable muscle contraction.
