What should you know about audiometry impedance?

It does not require you to press a button when you hear a tone. A soft probe seals the ear canal, briefly changes pressure, and records movement of the eardrum. Some appointments also include an acoustic reflex check, which measures an automatic middle-ear muscle response to sound.

The tracing can suggest whether the eardrum moves freely, is unusually stiff, or moves more than expected. It can also show pressure behind the eardrum and whether the probe detected a seal consistent with the ear canal's measured volume.

An unusual pattern may occur with middle-ear fluid, a blocked canal, a hole in the eardrum, a ventilation tube, or changes in the small middle-ear bones. The result is interpreted alongside an ear examination and other hearing tests; by itself, it does not identify every cause of hearing difficulty.

Tell the clinician about ear pain, discharge, recent ear surgery, ventilation tubes, or a known eardrum perforation before testing. Stay still and avoid speaking or swallowing while the measurement is taken, because movement can disturb the seal and tracing.

The pressure change may feel like fullness during an aircraft descent, but it is brief. If wax blocks the canal or the probe cannot seal, the ear may need examination before the measurement is repeated. Follow-up depends on the full hearing assessment rather than one tracing alone.

Arrange urgent medical assessment for a sudden loss or marked drop in hearing, especially in one ear, even if the ear feels blocked. Seek prompt care as well for severe ear pain, bloody or pus-like discharge, significant dizziness, facial weakness, or hearing change after a head injury.

A routine abnormal impedance result without these symptoms can usually be discussed with the referring clinician, who can decide whether examination, repeat testing, or specialist assessment is appropriate.

Ask whether the tracing was reliable in both ears, whether it suggests a canal or middle-ear issue, and how it compares with your tone and speech hearing results. You can also ask whether wax removal, treatment of an ear problem, repeat measurement, or referral to an audiologist or ear specialist is the next step.
