Atopic dermatitis and dogs

Atopic dermatitis reflects a weakened skin barrier and an inflammation-prone immune response. For someone who is sensitive, dog dander or saliva may contribute to itching and inflammation. A coat can also bring pollen or dust indoors, while scratches and licking can directly irritate vulnerable skin.

A flare after contact does not by itself prove dog allergy. Heat, sweat, cleaning products, pollen and changes in skin care may occur at the same time. Atopic dermatitis often presents with itchy, dry, cracked or crusted skin; repeated rubbing can leave temporary darker marks after inflammation settles.

Record where the rash appears, its timing and the type of dog contact. Wash hands after touching the animal, avoid face licking, keep the dog away from the bed, and clean soft furnishings with methods that do not add fragrance or harsh residue. Continue regular emollient care. Do not rehome a pet on the basis of one flare or an unconfirmed test; discuss the pattern with a dermatologist or allergy clinician first.

Book a review when eczema repeatedly worsens around dogs, disturbs sleep, spreads, or is not controlled by the current plan. Crusting, oozing, increasing pain, warmth or fever may signal infection and warrants prompt assessment. Wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the lips or tongue after animal contact requires urgent emergency care.

Ask whether the timing and distribution suggest direct irritation, airborne allergy or an unrelated flare. Clarify whether allergy testing would answer a specific question, how its result would change management, and which eczema medicines to use during a flare.
