Hydroxyzine blocks histamine signals involved in itch and swelling. It may ease symptoms, but it does not identify or remove the trigger. Take it only in the dose and schedule prescribed for you; do not use another person's tablets or take extra medicine for persistent welts.

Hives often present as raised, itchy welts that can change shape or location. Deeper swelling of the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet can occur as angioedema. Hydroxyzine is a sedating antihistamine, so sleepiness, slower reactions, dry mouth, or dizziness can affect daily activities. The medicine may be unsuitable with certain heart-rhythm conditions or medicines that affect heart rhythm, and sedating effects can increase when combined with alcohol, sleeping tablets, opioid pain medicines, or other central nervous system depressants.

Check the dispensing label and use the prescribed measuring device for liquid medicine. Until you know how hydroxyzine affects you, avoid driving, operating machinery, and tasks requiring quick reactions. Do not drink alcohol. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy or breastfeeding, fainting, palpitations, a known prolonged QT interval, heart disease, low electrolytes, and every prescription, non-prescription, or herbal product you use. If hives continue or recur, record possible exposures and arrange reassessment rather than repeatedly changing the dose yourself.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, collapse, severe dizziness, or difficulty speaking or swallowing. These symptoms can accompany a serious allergic reaction and should not be managed by waiting for an antihistamine to work. Seek prompt medical advice after taking hydroxyzine if you faint, develop a racing or irregular heartbeat, become unusually difficult to wake, or notice a new widespread blistering or pustular rash.

Confirm when to take each dose, how long the plan should continue, and what to do if a dose is missed. Ask whether your other medicines increase sedation or heart-rhythm risk, whether a less-sedating antihistamine fits daytime use, and what evaluation is appropriate if episodes keep returning.
