Asthma and biologic therapy: a patient guide

It is generally considered after a specialist confirms the asthma pattern, checks inhaler technique and adherence, and looks for treatable triggers or related conditions. A biologic supplements the asthma plan; it does not automatically replace controller inhalers.

Different biologics block different immune signals involved in airway swelling and mucus production. Blood results, allergy history, previous flare pattern, current medicines, and other health conditions help the specialist match a medicine to the type of inflammation.

Biologics are also used in dermatology for conditions such as psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa, but the medicine, dose, and eligibility depend on the condition being treated. A drug used for a skin condition should not be assumed to treat asthma.

Tell the prescribing team about infections, vaccinations, pregnancy plans, allergies, and every prescription or non-prescription medicine you use. Follow instructions for storage, injection technique, appointment timing, and missed doses for the particular product.

Keep using controller inhalers as directed and continue carrying the prescribed reliever. Track night waking, activity limits, reliever use, and flare-ups so the team can judge whether treatment is helping and whether other parts of the plan need adjustment.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips or tongue, throat tightness, widespread hives with breathing difficulty, collapse, or severe asthma symptoms that do not improve with the prescribed emergency plan. A biologic injection is not a rescue treatment for an active asthma attack.

Contact the treatment team for fever, a persistent infection, a troublesome injection-site reaction, or a new symptom that began after a dose. They can advise whether the next dose should proceed and whether an examination is needed.

Ask which inflammatory pattern the proposed medicine targets, how response will be assessed, which medicines must continue, what to do after a missed dose, and whom to contact after a suspected reaction. Confirm the training needed if injections will be given at home.
