Asperger's and ADHD: differences and overlap

Short answer
Asperger's is an older term within the autism spectrum, while ADHD is a separate neurodevelopmental condition; a person can have both.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Terminology
- Asperger's is an older diagnostic term now included within the autism spectrum.
- Co-occurrence
- Autism and ADHD can be present in the same person.
- Assessment focus
- Patterns over time, across settings and their effect on everyday life.
How are Asperger's and ADHD related?
Current clinical language generally describes autism spectrum disorder rather than diagnosing Asperger's separately. People may still use Asperger's as part of their identity or to describe an earlier diagnosis, so respectful language follows the person's preference.
Where traits overlap and differ
Both conditions can involve difficulty concentrating, organisation problems, sensory overload, restlessness or social strain. Similar outward behaviour may arise differently: losing focus because of distractibility is not the same experience as disengaging when a conversation is unclear or overwhelming.
Autism assessment considers social communication, patterns of interests, preference for predictability and sensory experiences. ADHD assessment examines persistent patterns of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity or internal restlessness across daily settings. No single trait confirms either condition.
Getting a useful assessment
Write down concrete examples from home, education, work and relationships, including when they began and how they affect daily tasks. School reports, earlier assessments and observations from someone who knows you well may add context if you are comfortable sharing them.
Support can target the difficulty even while assessment is under way. Clear routines, written instructions, reduced distractions, movement breaks, sensory adjustments and task reminders can be tailored rather than applied as a fixed package.
When to seek professional support
Consider an assessment when attention, impulsivity, sensory needs or social communication differences repeatedly interfere with learning, work, relationships, self-care or emotional wellbeing. A clinician should also consider sleep problems, anxiety, mood difficulties, learning needs and physical health factors.
Seek urgent help if distress leads to thoughts of self-harm, inability to stay safe, severe agitation or a crisis at home. Contact local emergency services or an urgent mental health service and remain with the person when it is safe to do so.
Topics to raise with the clinician
Ask which professional conducts the assessment, how childhood and current experiences will be explored, how overlapping conditions are considered, what adjustments are available during appointments, and which supports can begin before a final conclusion.

Questions people ask
Can someone be autistic and have ADHD?
Yes. They are distinct conditions, and an assessment can consider evidence for both rather than forcing every trait into one explanation.
Can an online questionnaire diagnose either condition?
No. A questionnaire may organise concerns, but diagnosis requires a broader clinical assessment of development, current experiences, settings and alternative explanations.
