What should you know about an arm fat compression garment?

After breast or lymph-node treatment, a fuller or heavier arm may reflect lymphoedema rather than fat alone, so assessment should guide garment type and pressure.

A fitted sleeve applies graduated external pressure that can help limit fluid accumulation and support movement of lymph. A cosmetic shaping sleeve mainly changes appearance while worn; neither type destroys fat cells.

Swelling related to lymphoedema may come with heaviness, tightness, aching, skin changes or reduced flexibility. The correct garment depends on the arm and hand areas involved, skin condition, limb measurements and ability to put it on safely.

Have a lymphoedema clinician or trained fitter measure the limb if compression is intended for swelling. The fabric should lie flat without rolling, digging into the armpit or leaving the hand more swollen.

Check the skin before and after wear, keep it clean and dry, and follow the prescribed wearing schedule. Remove the sleeve and seek fitting advice if it causes numbness, tingling, colour change, cold fingers, increasing pain or new swelling beyond an edge.

Arrange prompt assessment for new, one-sided or rapidly increasing arm swelling, especially after cancer treatment, because the cause needs identification before relying on compression.

Seek same-day care for redness, heat, tenderness, fever, leaking skin or sudden marked swelling. Get emergency help if arm swelling occurs with chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness or blue-grey lips.

Ask whether the change is fluid, fat or both; whether the hand also needs compression; which garment style and pressure are suitable; how long to wear it; how to wash it; and when the limb should be remeasured.
