Can anxiety lead to depression?

Short answer
Long-lasting anxiety can contribute to depression, yet the conditions are distinct and may occur separately or together for several reasons.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Relationship
- Anxiety and depression can reinforce each other without being the same condition.
- Assessment
- Sleep, mood, substances, medicines and physical health all matter.
- Emergency
- Suicidal thoughts or inability to stay safe need immediate help.
Can anxiety cause depression?
Constant worry, poor sleep, withdrawal and exhaustion can erode mood over time. This does not mean everyone with anxiety develops depression, and low mood should not automatically be explained by anxiety.
Recognising overlap and differences
Anxiety often centres on fear, tension, racing thoughts and anticipating danger. Depression may bring persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, slowed thinking or reduced motivation. Both can disturb sleep, appetite, concentration, energy and relationships.
Symptoms can form a cycle: fear leads to avoidance, avoidance reduces rewarding activity and isolation lowers mood. Physical illness, medicine effects, substance use, grief and major stress can also shape the picture, so a full assessment is more useful than choosing a single cause.
Steps toward recovery
Book an appointment when symptoms persist, recur or interfere with daily functioning. Describe when anxiety and low mood began, sleep and appetite changes, panic episodes, medicines, alcohol or other substance use, and any periods of unusually elevated mood or reduced need for sleep.
Treatment may combine talking therapy, structured routines, physical activity, social support and medication. Keep goals small during difficult periods: maintain regular meals, get out of bed at a consistent time and choose one manageable task. Do not stop prescribed mental health medicine abruptly without clinical advice.
When immediate support is needed
Get urgent help if you have thoughts of suicide or self-harm, feel unable to keep yourself safe, hear or see things others do not, become severely agitated, or cannot manage essential food, fluids or shelter. Stay with a trusted person and contact local emergency services or attend an emergency department.
Seek prompt clinical advice for rapidly worsening hopelessness, major changes in behaviour, or an unusually energised state with little sleep, impulsive behaviour or racing speech. These changes need assessment rather than waiting for a routine visit.
Planning care with your clinician
Ask whether your symptoms fit anxiety, depression or both; which therapies address the main problems; what medicine effects to watch for; and what crisis contacts you should use if safety concerns arise.

Questions people ask
How do I know whether low mood is depression?
Depression involves a pattern of symptoms and functional change, not a single bad day. A clinician can assess mood, interest, sleep, appetite, thinking, safety and other possible causes.
Can the same therapy help anxiety and depression?
Some talking therapies and medicines can address both, but the choice depends on symptom pattern, health history, preferences and previous response.
What should I do if I am thinking about self-harm?
Treat this as urgent. Move away from anything you could use to hurt yourself, tell a trusted person, and contact local emergency services or go to an emergency department.
