Antibiotics for a stye

A clinician may prescribe an eye ointment when there is associated bacterial eyelid inflammation or an oral antibiotic when redness and swelling extend into the surrounding lid. Antibiotics do not mechanically unblock the affected gland, so supportive care remains useful.

A stye is a tender red lump at or within the eyelid, usually arising when an eyelash follicle or nearby oil gland becomes inflamed. It may form a small yellow point and cause local watering or irritation. A firm lump that is no longer tender may instead be a blocked gland called a chalazion.

Diffuse eye redness, significant light sensitivity, reduced vision, or pain inside the eye is not typical of a simple stye. Those features deserve a separate eye assessment rather than treatment with borrowed drops.

Hold a clean, comfortably warm compress against the closed eyelid several times through the day, reheating it as it cools. Gentle warmth encourages natural drainage. Wash your hands before and after touching the area, pause contact-lens use and eye makeup, and keep towels and cosmetics to yourself.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump because this can push infection into nearby tissue. Use prescribed ointment or tablets exactly as directed, taking care not to touch the applicator tip to the lashes or eye. Discard eye products that may have been contaminated.

Arrange prompt assessment if swelling spreads across the eyelid or face, the eye becomes difficult to open, fever develops, pain is increasing, or the lump does not begin to settle. Recurrent styes or a persistent lump in the same place should also be examined.

Seek urgent eye care for any change in vision, severe eye pain, marked sensitivity to light, pain when moving the eye, a bulging eye, vomiting with eye symptoms, or rapidly advancing redness. These findings can indicate a problem deeper than a surface eyelid infection.

Ask whether the lump is a stye, a chalazion, or another eyelid condition; whether infection has spread; and how the medicine should be applied. Mention contact-lens use, recent eye surgery, immune suppression, skin conditions affecting the eyelids, and antibiotic allergies, as these details can change management.
