How the ring prevents pregnancy

The hormones mainly stop ovulation. They also thicken cervical mucus and make the uterine lining less receptive. The ring sits in the vagina; it does not need to cover the cervix or be placed in one exact position to release its hormones.

Bleeding may become more predictable, lighter, or less painful, while spotting, nausea, breast tenderness, headache, mood changes, or vaginal irritation can occur. Suitability depends on medical history because combined hormonal contraception can raise the risk of a blood clot.

Using it correctly

Follow the schedule supplied with your specific ring and record removal and replacement dates. Wash your hands before insertion or removal. If the ring comes out, is left in longer than directed, or a replacement is late, check the product instructions promptly and seek pharmacist or clinician advice about backup contraception and emergency contraception.

Before starting, mention migraine with aura, previous blood clots, high blood pressure, smoking, recent birth, breastfeeding, liver disease, breast cancer, and planned surgery or prolonged immobility. Some epilepsy, tuberculosis, HIV, and herbal medicines can reduce contraceptive protection, so provide a complete medicine list.
