Another name for a tetanus shot

It may appear within the name of a combination vaccine because the injection can protect against tetanus alongside other infections. The exact label depends on the formulation and the recipient's age.

Tetanus is sometimes called lockjaw, but that name refers to the illness rather than the injection. Vaccine records may use abbreviations for combination products, so the word tetanus might not be written out in full.

Tetanus-containing vaccines train the immune system to recognise a toxin made by tetanus bacteria. They cannot cause tetanus. Protection is maintained through scheduled vaccination and, in some circumstances, additional management after a wound.

Clean a wound under running water, remove visible dirt if this can be done safely, and cover it with a clean dressing. Contact a clinic if the wound is deep, punctured, contaminated, caused by a bite, or contains material that cannot be removed.

Take your vaccination record if available. The clinician will consider the wound and your previous doses when deciding whether you need a tetanus-containing vaccine or other treatment. Antibiotics used for an infected wound do not substitute for vaccination.

Get urgent medical help for jaw stiffness, painful muscle spasms, trouble swallowing, or breathing difficulty, particularly after a wound. These symptoms require assessment even if the injury looked minor.

Seek immediate help after vaccination if breathing becomes difficult or the face, lips, or tongue swell. For increasing wound redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever, arrange prompt medical review.

Ask which tetanus-containing product appears in your record, whether your vaccination schedule is current, and whether the type of wound changes what you need now. Tell the clinician about previous serious vaccine reactions and medicines that affect immunity.
