Angular cheilitis in dark skin

Redness can look deep red, violet, grey, brown, or less obvious than expected. Texture and symptoms are useful clues: look for a fissure in the mouth angle, moist or crusted skin, burning, and pain when opening the lips. Good lighting can make these changes easier to see.

Inflammation can leave the corner darker or lighter after tenderness and scaling have resolved. This post-inflammatory colour change may outlast the active rash and does not by itself show that infection remains. Continued cracking, wetness, crusting, or pain is more suggestive of ongoing activity.

Saliva exposure and friction still drive barrier damage regardless of skin tone. Yeast, bacteria, dermatitis, lip products, toothpaste, drooling, and dental factors can contribute. Assessment should consider the feel, distribution, symptoms, and history rather than relying on redness alone.

Pat the corners dry after washing, eating, and brushing, then use a simple fragrance-free barrier. Avoid licking, rubbing, picking scales, or applying harsh lightening products to inflamed skin; extra irritation can prolong both the fissure and the colour change.

A clinician can determine whether protection alone is suitable or whether infection or dermatitis needs targeted treatment. Use medicated creams only as directed, especially steroids around the mouth. If a product burns or makes the area itchier, stop it and record its ingredients for the visit.

Arrange an examination when cracking persists, repeatedly returns, spreads away from the angles, or leaves a changing area that remains sore, thickened, or ulcerated. Review is also useful if altered colour is accompanied by renewed scale, discharge, mouth sores, or symptoms suggesting a nutritional or health problem.

Seek prompt care for increasing warmth and swelling, rapidly spreading discolouration with pain, pus, fever, or difficulty eating. Breathing or swallowing difficulty requires urgent help. Comparing the two sides and using earlier photographs may help a clinician understand how quickly the appearance changed.

Ask which features indicate active inflammation, whether the remaining colour is post-inflammatory, and what skin-safe care is appropriate while it fades. Discuss prior rashes, sensitive products, denture fit, drooling, dry mouth, and any treatment that changed the colour or texture.
