Using Aquaphor for angular cheilitis

As an occlusive ointment, it reduces water loss and creates a physical barrier over irritated skin. That can support healing when repeated wetting, licking or dryness is maintaining the fissure. Improvement with a barrier does not identify the original cause, and worsening beneath an ointment needs reassessment.

Angular cheilitis affects the hinge-like folds at the mouth corners, where saliva can soften skin and movement can reopen it. A barrier separates the surface from moisture and friction. It cannot eradicate Candida yeast, bacteria, or oral thrush, correct an ill-fitting denture, replace missing nutrients, or remove an allergen. Aquaphor formulations may contain lanolin alcohol, which can irritate people who are sensitive to it; a plain petrolatum product may be a simpler alternative for them.

Wash your hands, gently clean the corners, pat them dry and smooth on a thin external layer with a clean fingertip or cotton bud. Reapply when the barrier has rubbed away, particularly after eating or washing, and stop lip licking or picking. Avoid sharing the container or repeatedly touching it with an unwashed finger. Stop using the product if burning, itching, swelling or a new rash appears. Do not layer it over a prescription medicine unless the prescriber or pharmacist explains the order, because an occlusive layer can alter how some medicines behave on skin.

Arrange clinical review if the crack persists despite careful barrier use, frequently recurs, becomes increasingly painful, develops oozing or crust, or appears alongside white patches inside the mouth. A swab or examination may identify yeast, bacteria, eczema or contact allergy. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading facial redness, substantial swelling, fever, severe pain, trouble swallowing, or difficulty breathing.

Ask whether a barrier alone fits the appearance, whether the product ingredients could be irritating your skin, and whether an antifungal, antibiotic or anti-inflammatory treatment is needed. Clarify exactly where each product belongs and in what order to apply it. Recurrent cases may justify discussion of dentures, dry mouth, diabetes, iron or vitamin status, and habits that keep the corners wet.
