The medicine reduces oestrogen production, a hormone involved in growth-plate closure in all sexes. A paediatric endocrinologist should assess the reason for limited growth, remaining growth potential and possible harms before discussing it.

Anastrozole is an aromatase inhibitor developed for hormone-sensitive breast cancer, not a general height medicine. A specialist may consider its hormone effect in selected adolescents whose growth plates remain open. Slower bone maturation does not promise extra adult height, and a predicted height is an estimate rather than a certain outcome.

The decision needs a broader growth assessment. Family growth patterns, puberty stage, nutrition, long-term illness, thyroid or other hormone problems, medicines and the pattern on a growth chart can all change the interpretation. Bone age imaging and laboratory tests may help the specialist judge whether any growth remains.

Do not use anastrozole obtained from another person or an online source. If it is offered, ask the paediatric endocrinologist to explain the treatment goal, uncertainties, planned stopping point and alternatives. Share all medicines and supplements, as well as any history of fractures, bone disease, liver problems or cholesterol concerns.

Monitoring may include growth measurements, puberty development, bone maturation, bone strength and blood tests for liver function, fats and hormone effects. Keep follow-up visits even when no side effects are obvious. Report mood changes, persistent joint pain, unusual tiredness or other new symptoms rather than adjusting the dose yourself.

Call the prescribing service promptly for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a suspected fracture, severe headache or a major change in mood or behaviour. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, chest pain, or sudden weakness. Bring the medicine container and current medication list when urgent assessment is needed.

Ask what diagnosis explains the growth pattern, whether the growth plates are still open, and how adult-height expectations were estimated. Request a clear explanation of bone, hormone, liver and metabolic monitoring. Discuss what would make the clinician change or stop treatment and what physical or emotional changes the family should watch for at home.
