What to know about an amnio scan

Amniocentesis is an invasive diagnostic test in which a clinician removes a small sample of amniotic fluid. Ultrasound is used to view the pregnancy and guide the needle; an ultrasound scan alone does not collect fluid or provide the same genetic information.

Clinics may use informal wording differently. Your appointment could be for a standard pregnancy ultrasound, a discussion about amniocentesis, or the amniocentesis procedure itself. The booking message should say whether a needle and fluid sample are involved.

The fluid contains cells that can be examined for specific chromosome or genetic conditions. The test offered depends on why testing was discussed, so a normal result only addresses the conditions included in the requested analysis.

Check the appointment name, the reason for testing, whether any preparation is needed, and when consent will be discussed. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, your blood group if known, and any vaginal bleeding, fever, or infection symptoms before the visit.

Ask which conditions the laboratory will assess, when results may arrive, and who will explain them. You can also discuss non-invasive screening such as NIPT and another diagnostic option, chorionic villus sampling, if either is relevant to your stage of pregnancy.

After amniocentesis, seek prompt maternity advice for leaking clear fluid, vaginal bleeding, fever, chills, regular contractions, severe or worsening abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement if you already feel movement regularly. Use urgent services if symptoms are severe or you cannot reach your maternity team.
